Winter Squash – Oregon Homestead Sweet Meat

$4.25$8.00

Description

A hellava squash! These massive, 10-20 lb, blue-grey beauties are the perfect antidote to our long, drizzly PNW winters.  Oregon Homestead Sweet Meat Squash has thick, moist and oh-so-sweet flesh that you can use in soups, pies, curries, or just enjoy plain with salt and butter. An Oregon heirloom that was improved by local breeder Carol Deppe for cold-soil germination, a small seed cavity, vigorous growth and storability. We blow some minds when we drop one of these in our CSA members’ share every Fall. Large, sprawling vines produce 2-3 squash per plant.

Days to Maturity: 100-110
Latin name: Cucurbita maxima
Life cycle for seed saving: Annual

Planting Instructions:
Direct seed Sweet Meat Squash in early May or start indoors 3 weeks before transplant. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 75-85°. Seeding depth:1/2”. Plant spacing: 24-36”. Row Spacing: 5-6 ft.

All of our seed is Non-GMO and Certified Organic by Washington State Department of Agriculture. We grow the majority of our varieties here at Deep Harvest Farm on Whidbey Island while we purchase the rest from other small, organic Northwest seed growers. Finally, all of our offerings are open-pollinated (OP) so that you too can save and share seed from these plants!
